Kanin
Mountain Alpine massif on Italy–Slovenia border with ski slopes
A high limestone massif on the Italy-Slovenia border popular for alpine climbing, multi‑day hikes and a seasonal ski area accessed from the Italian side.
Kanin is a mountain massif in the Julian Alps on the Italy-Slovenia border in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. The massif includes multiple peaks that rise above 2,500 metres and forms a prominent limestone ridge in the range.
The area offers high-alpine hiking across ridges and cols, technical routes and via ferrata sections, and a developed ski area on the Slovenian side served by a cable car. Alpine views extend over surrounding valleys and into the Julian Alps, and there are marked trails for day and multi-day routes.
The massif is a limestone alpine range shaped by long geological uplift and erosion; local high-alpine use has included seasonal grazing and mountaineering. In the 20th century recreational infrastructure expanded, notably ski lift and trail development on the Slovenian slopes.
The massif straddles the border between Italy (Friuli-Venezia Giulia) and Slovenia in the Julian Alps, lying inland from the northern Adriatic coast. The Italian approaches are in the mountainous areas of northeastern Italy close to the border with Slovenia.
- Access: Access from both Italy and Slovenia, with established hiking routes and an alpine ski area on the Slovenian flank.
- Scale: Peaks on the massif rise above 2,500 metres, making it one of the higher massifs of the Julian Alps.
