Park Remote New South Wales park with sandstone gorges
A rugged national park in New South Wales, Kanangra‑Boyd features sandstone escarpments, deep gorges and the Kanangra Walls lookout; bushwalkers come for multi‑day routes and canyon country.
Kanangra-Boyd National Park is a protected wilderness area in New South Wales, Australia, occupying rugged sandstone plateaus and deep gorges. It is part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area and is valued for its dramatic cliffs and relatively remote bushwalking country.
The park offers cliff-top lookouts, short walking tracks and long remote routes through sandstone plateaus and river gorges. Key on-site features include sheer escarpments, waterfalls, and forested plateaus that attract bushwalkers, canyoners and nature photographers.
The landscape is the result of long-term erosion of Permian-Triassic sandstones and has been traditionally managed by local Aboriginal peoples; it later gained statutory protection to conserve its geomorphology, ecosystems and cultural values. Management has focused on maintaining remote wilderness character while providing access to marked tracks and lookout areas.
The park lies in central New South Wales within the broader Blue Mountains region, west of the Sydney basin. It occupies a remote inland area of steep country and is accessed via sealed and unsealed roads from nearby regional centres.
- Best viewpoints: Famous lookout points include the Kanangra Walls where clear views into the gorge and across the plateau provide the best panoramas.
- Access and conditions: Trail conditions vary from short day walks to remote multi-day routes; prepare for limited facilities and rapidly changing weather.
What to See #
- Kanangra Walls: A dramatic sandstone escarpment and lookout over a deep gorge that is among the park's most photographed features, reached by several walking tracks and short drives within the park.
- Kanangra Plateau: A high tableland of sandstone heath and eucalypt forest that forms much of the park's upland, used by walkers for multi-day routes and access to cliff-top views.
- Boyd River and falls: A river and series of cascades running through steep gorges, providing watercourses, swimming holes in season and river-side campsites.
- Kanangra Gorge: Steep-sided gorges and river valleys cut into Permian-Triassic sandstone, popular with experienced bushwalkers and canyoners.
