A limestone-dominated alpine range with steep peaks and high meadows, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps draw hikers, climbers and backcountry skiers to marked trails, via ferratas and mountain huts.
The Kamnik-Savinja Alps are a subrange of the Southern Limestone Alps that rise between northern Slovenia and the adjacent Austrian border region. The range is characterised by steep limestone peaks, narrow ridges and glaciated valleys.
High points include Grintovec (2,558 m) and Kočna (about 2,540 m), which are popular with hikers and climbers. The area contains a network of marked trails and mountain huts used as bases for ascents and multi-day routes.
Geographically the range sits above the Savinja River valley and the town of Kamnik to the northwest, forming a prominent alpine backdrop to nearby lowland towns.

How to Get to Kamnik–Savinja Alps #
Base towns are Kamnik and Kranj, both roughly a 30-60 minute drive from Ljubljana (about 20-40 km). Regular bus services run from Ljubljana to Kamnik; from Kamnik, well-marked trailheads lead into the massif. For longer approaches, use regional buses to Logarska Dolina or Solčava and hike from the valley huts.
Tips for Visiting Kamnik–Savinja Alps #
- If attempting peaks such as Grintovec, hire a certified mountain guide and check local mountain rescue advisories.
- Start long routes from Kamnik or Kranj; read alpine hut rules - many require reservations and have strict quiet hours.
- Bring layers: weather can switch from sun to sleet within an hour above 1,500 m; crampons and an ice axe are necessary in winter.
