Kalymnos is a Greek island in the Dodecanese group in the South Aegean region, known for its maritime history and steep limestone cliffs. The island has a long tradition of sponge diving and a growing reputation as a premier sport-climbing destination.

Rock climbers come for extensive limestone crags and bolted routes concentrated around bays such as Massouri and the cliffs near Telendos; the island hosts thousands of sport routes of varying difficulty. Seaside towns such as Pothia provide ferry links, ports and local services, and small museums recount the sponge-diving heritage.

Kalymnos was inhabited in antiquity and developed a specialized sponge-diving economy over many centuries; its maritime culture shaped local architecture and trade. The island passed through Ottoman rule and, like other Dodecanese islands, became part of the modern Greek state after the 20th century.

Geographically the island sits in the Aegean Sea between Kos and Leros; the main harbour and settlement is Pothia, with regular ferry connections to other islands in the Dodecanese.

  • Sponge heritage: Home to a long tradition of commercial sponge diving and still known locally for sponge workshops and museums.
  • Climbing: Recognised internationally for sport climbing with thousands of bolted limestone routes on steep coastal cliffs, attracting climbers year-round.

What to See #

  • Pothia: Serves as the island's administrative and commercial centre with the main ferry port and several harbourside cafes and shops.
  • Massouri: A coastal village and the principal base for sport climbing on the island, with accommodation and access to many bolted routes on nearby cliffs.
  • Telendos: A small, nearshore islet separated from Kalymnos by a short ferry hop and known for its quiet harbour, whitewashed houses and local tavernas.

How to Get to Kalymnos #

Ferry: Regular ferries run from Piraeus (Athens) and the nearby island of Kos; crossing times vary (from Kos ~30-60 minutes). By air: nearest airport on Kos; from there ferries connect. Once on Kalymnos, Pothia is the main port and hub for buses, taxis and boat charters to remote crags.

Tips for Visiting Kalymnos #

  • If climbing, aim for morning climbs to avoid the hot afternoon sun; local guides know the best protected routes and tide tables for sea approaches.
  • Sample the local sponge markets in Pothia and ask older divers about the island's sponge-fishing history - it's part maritime anthropology, part fish tale.
  • Bring a harness and shoes if attempting multi-pitch routes; many climbing lines are limestone with small ledges and pockets.
