Kalwaria Zebrzydowska: the Mannerist Architectural and Park Landscape Complex and Pilgrimage Park

Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a Mannerist architectural and park landscape complex and pilgrimage park in southern Poland, centered on a sanctuary and system of devotional chapels and pathways. The site reflects a deliberate, planned fusion of built and natural elements designed to support Catholic pilgrimage and devotional practice.

Visitors encounter an arranged sequence of chapels, stations and walking routes that recreate aspects of the Jerusalem Calvary and support organized processions and private devotion. The complex includes ecclesiastical buildings set within a managed landscape of paths, viewpoints and constructed devotional stops used by pilgrims.

Founded in the early 17th century as a purpose-built pilgrimage ensemble, the complex grew with successive additions of chapels, basilicas and park elements reflecting Mannerist and later baroque influences. It became an established pilgrimage destination in the Polish lands and retains its devotional and cultural functions.

The pilgrimage complex is located in the Lesser Poland region, set amid rolling countryside and woodlands, within reach of regional urban centres including Krakow to the north-east. The site is approached by local roads from nearby towns.
