Kalterer See (Lago di Caldaro) is a small lake in South Tyrol / Trentino-Alto Adige in northern Italy, located beside the wine-growing village of Kaltern/Caldaro. It is a local recreational lake known for swimming and watersports.
The lakeshore is lined with promenades, bathing areas and facilities for windsurfing and small boats; the surrounding landscape is dominated by vineyards and fruit orchards that characterize the lower Adige valley. The lake is a focal point for local tourism and day visitors from nearby towns.
The basin is of glacial and fluvial origin and has been used for recreation and local fisheries for centuries. Management focuses on balancing recreation with water quality and the agricultural landscape around the lake.
The lake sits just outside the village of Kaltern/Caldaro in the Salten-Kalterer area of South Tyrol, south of the city of Bolzano, set among rolling vineyards at the foot of the Mendel and Dolomite foothills.

How to Get to Kalterer See #
Kalterer See (Lago di Caldaro) lies just outside the village of Caldaro/Kaltern, south of Bolzano. By car it is roughly 12-15 km from Bolzano; local provincial roads connect Bolzano with Caldaro and there is parking near the lakeshore.
Regional buses run from Bolzano bus station to Caldaro/Kaltern (check the Alto Adige/Südtirol bus timetables at the station). From the village centre the lakeshore is a short walk of about 10-20 minutes.
Tips for Visiting Kalterer See #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon in summer to avoid the busiest hours at the main Strandbad: July-August bring the biggest crowds, so aim for sunrise swims or late-afternoon lakeside walks when the central beach eases up.
- Start the circular lakeside path at the village of Kaltern/Caldaro to dodge the busiest beach access points: the roughly 3-4 km loop around Kalterer See is compact and much less crowded if you begin from the village side rather than the public bathing area.
- Explore beyond the main beach toward the quieter northern shore: many visitors stay at the paid central bathing area and miss the calmer stretches of shoreline and vineyards on the lake's quieter margins-walk or cycle a short distance to find less-used spots.
