Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche

The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche is a Protestant church complex on Breitscheidplatz in Berlin-Charlottenburg, notable as a preserved war ruin and postwar reconstruction. The original church was completed in the late 19th century and the replacement buildings date from the mid-20th century.

The most visible element is the bomb-damaged original spire left as a memorial; its jagged silhouette is a landmark on the Kurfürstendamm shopping avenue. Adjacent are the modern 1959-1963 buildings - a hexagonal bell tower and a low worship hall - which contrast sharply with the ruined tower.

The complex contains a memorial exhibition that interprets the 1943 destruction and the church’s symbolic role in the city; the modern structures include distinct blue-glass interiors and a newer congregation space completed in the early 1960s.

The original church was designed by Franz Heinrich Schwechten and completed in the 1890s as a memorial to Kaiser Wilhelm I. It was heavily damaged by Allied bombing in 1943, after which authorities chose to retain the ruined tower as a war memorial and to commission a new church complex, completed between 1959 and 1963.

The site stands on Breitscheidplatz on the western side of central Berlin, at the eastern end of Kurfürstendamm and close to Zoologischer Garten station, surrounded by dense urban development and major shopping streets.
