Kaiser Mountains
Mountains Alpine mountain range in Tyrol with hiking routes
A Tyrolean Alpine range known for jagged ridges, via ferratas and ski areas; outdoors enthusiasts come for climbing, alpine hiking and winter skiing.
The Kaiser Mountains (Kaisergebirge) are a compact mountain range in Tyrol, Austria, divided into the rugged Wilder Kaiser and the gentler Zahmer Kaiser. The range is a prominent feature east of Kufstein and forms part of the Northern Limestone Alps.
The Wilder Kaiser is notable for steep limestone ridges, cliffs and technical climbing routes, while the Zahmer Kaiser offers lower-elevation hiking and alpine pastureland. The range is popular with hikers, climbers and ski-tourers and contains well-marked trails and mountain huts used by outdoor enthusiasts.
Peak-bagging, via ferratas and multi-day ridge traverses are common activities; mountaineering infrastructure includes fixed routes and alpine accommodation. The mountains have long been used for traditional alpine pastoralism as well as modern outdoor recreation.
Geographically the Kaiser Mountains lie in Tyrol, north of the main Alpine crest, and form a recognizable landmark on the skyline when approaching from the Inn Valley and Kufstein area.
- Highest point: The highest summit in the range, Ellmauer Halt, reaches 2,344 metres and is a major objective for climbers in the Wilder Kaiser sector.
- Subranges: The range is divided into a rugged, climbing-oriented Wilder Kaiser and a gentler Zahmer Kaiser that together form a compact mountain group east of Kufstein in Tyrol.
What to See #
- Wilder Kaiser: The Wilder Kaiser is the more rugged, rocky core of the range, featuring steep cliffs and classic alpine peaks popular with technical climbers and mountaineers.
- Zahmer Kaiser: The Zahmer Kaiser is the gentler, lower-elevation sector with more rounded terrain and popular hiking routes and alpine pastures used for non-technical walking.
How to Get to Kaiser Mountains #

Frequent ÖBB regional trains travel to Kufstein and to St. Johann in Tirol; from those towns local buses or mountain lifts and marked trailheads provide access into the range. If driving from Innsbruck (the nearest major city), allow roughly an hour to an hour-and-a-half depending on exact trailhead and traffic; local roads from Kufstein or Kitzbühel bring you to parking areas at the base of popular routes.
Tips for Visiting Kaiser Mountains #

- If you intend to do any via ferrata or exposed alpine routes, check local difficulty grades, reserve mountain huts in advance and hire a qualified mountain guide for harder lines.
