Kadavu Island is the principal island of the Kadavu Group in Fiji’s Eastern Division, known for its rugged interior and extensive surrounding coral reef. The island and its reef system are important for local communities and marine biodiversity.

Outdoor activities center on diving, snorkelling and boat trips along the Great Astrolabe Reef, a large barrier and fringing reef system that runs off the island’s shores. Coastal villages and small resorts provide access to beaches, traditional Fijian village culture and guided nature excursions inland.

The island has long been inhabited by indigenous Fijian communities who maintain subsistence and small-scale commercial activities; its relative isolation has helped preserve traditional lifeways and reef-based livelihoods. Kadavu has not been heavily urbanized compared with the larger Fijian islands.

Situated to the south of Fiji’s main island group, Kadavu lies within the Eastern Division and is separated from Viti Levu by open sea; the island’s communities are reached by small passenger ferries and limited air services.

  • Diving and reef life: Famous for world-class scuba diving and snorkelling on the surrounding reef system, which supports rich coral biodiversity.
  • Limited road network: Many coastal settlements have limited roads and rely on boats for transport, preserving low-density development and village life.

What to See #

  • Vunisea (Ilanivatu): Serves as the main settlement and administrative centre on the island, with basic services for residents and visitors.
  • Great Astrolabe Reef: A major fringing and barrier reef system offering dive sites and snorkelling routes, noted for coral walls, channels and diverse marine life.
