Parque Juan Carlos I is a large municipal park in the northeast of Madrid, named after Spain’s former king and opened in the early 1990s. It was created as a major urban green space and is one of the city’s largest modern parks.
The park was developed and opened in the early 1990s as part of Madrid’s urban expansion and to provide recreational space near the city’s northeastern districts. It has since been managed by the city council and adapted with paths, planting and cultural installations.
Located in the northeastern part of Madrid within the district near IFEMA and the Barajas area, it lies a short drive or public-transit ride from central Madrid and close to the airport and major exhibition venues.
- Location tip: Situated in the northeast of Madrid adjacent to the IFEMA exhibition centre and close to Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, making it easy to combine with arrivals or business visits.
- Scale: Roughly 160 hectares in size, offering extensive lawns, walking and cycling paths and formal planting areas that suit long visits rather than short stops.
What to See #
- Lake: A large artificial lake near the centre of the park that is used for small-boat rental and is edged by promenades and lawns.
- Sculpture collection: A dispersed public sculpture collection with works by Spanish and international artists placed across the park's pathways and open spaces.
