Jezercë
Mountain Albania's highest peak in the Accursed Mountains
Rising in the Albanian Alps, Jezercë (Maja Jezercë) is a sharp limestone peak popular with experienced hikers and climbers seeking steep ridges, remote trails and high-altitude views across the Prokletije range.
Jezercë (Maja Jezerce) is the highest mountain in the Albanian Alps and within Albanian territory, rising to 2,694 m. It is a prominent limestone peak in the Prokletije range and a major objective for experienced mountaineers.
Routes to the summit traverse steep, rocky ridges and alpine terrain; the mountain features dramatic north faces, ridgelines and glacial cirques at higher elevations. Climbers and hikers approach from mountain valleys such as Valbona and Theth and should be prepared for technical ground and rapidly changing weather.
The mountain and surrounding highlands have long been used by pastoral communities and are now part of protected mountain landscapes valued for traditional culture and alpine recreation.
Situated in northern Albania within the Prokletije (Accursed Mountains), the peak lies close to the borders with Montenegro and Kosovo and dominates the local highland landscape.
- Elevation and difficulty: The peak reaches 2,694 m and is the highest point of the Prokletije (Accursed Mountains) within Albanian territory, requiring alpine experience for safe ascent.
How to Get to Jezercë #
Reach Shkodër by bus or car; from Shkodër take the minibus (furgon) to the Valbona valley (approx. 3-4 hours) or to Theth (via the mountain pass in summer). Trailheads and mountain huts in Valbona/Theth are the usual starting points for multi-day approaches.
Tips for Visiting Jezercë #
- Do not attempt the ascent without a local mountain guide; weather changes rapidly and crevasses remain in shaded cirques.
- Base in Theth or Valbona and allow at least two days for approach and acclimatisation.
- Carry a topo map and a GPS track - trails can be faint and route-finding through limestone towers is tricky.
Best Time to Visit Jezercë #
Climb or approach in the short, high-Albanian-summer season; outside of July-August conditions can be hazardous and many routes remain snowbound.
