The Jesuit Missions of the Guaranis are a transnational group of mission towns and ruins in northeastern Argentina and southern Brazil established by Jesuit missionaries for Guaraní communities. The ensemble comprises several mission sites in Argentina-San Ignacio Miní, Santa Ana, Nuestra Señora de Loreto and Santa María la Mayor-and the large ruins at São Miguel das Missões in Brazil.
Major features at each site include the remains of church buildings, plazas, workshops and associated domestic structures laid out according to mission town plans that combined religious, social and economic functions. Construction used local materials and integrated European architectural forms with indigenous labour and craft traditions.
The missions date from the 17th and 18th centuries and were centres for evangelization, education, craft production and organised agriculture for Guaraní populations under Jesuit administration. The 1767 expulsion of the Jesuits by the Spanish Crown and subsequent conflicts led to decline, abandonment or destruction of many mission complexes, leaving archaeological and structural remains that are now conserved and studied.
The sites are located in the borderlands of Argentina and Brazil, set in riverine and lowland landscapes where the Guaraní lived and cultivated land; they are accessible from regional towns in Misiones Province (Argentina) and Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil).
- Mission function: The missions were established by Jesuit missionaries in the 17th and 18th centuries to organise Guaraní communities and combine religious instruction with craft and agricultural production.
- Jesuit expulsion: The Jesuit order was expelled from Spanish territories in 1767, an event that led to major changes and abandonment of many mission settlements.
