Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue
Historical Site Baroque Jesuit mission ruins from colonial Paraguay
In Itapúa Department, the Jesuit missions of La Santísima Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangue are 17th-18th‑century reduction ruins; visitors tour Baroque stone façades, plazas and the on‑site museum.
The Jesuit Missions of La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangue are two 17th- and 18th-century mission complexes in southeastern Paraguay’s Itapúa Department. They are outstanding examples of Jesuit reductions where missionaries and Guarani communities established semi-autonomous settlements focused on religion, crafts and agriculture.
La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná is notable for its extensive and relatively well-preserved stone church, cloister areas and the orthogonal plaza which served as the mission’s civic and religious centre. Jesús de Tavarangue contains the remains of a large Baroque church that was never fully completed, leaving exposed foundations and monumental façades.
The missions were constructed by Jesuit missionaries between the late 1600s and mid-1700s and functioned as organised communal centres until the Jesuit order was expelled from Spanish territories in 1767. After the expulsion the missions declined and fell into ruin over subsequent decades.
Both mission sites are located in Itapúa Department in southeastern Paraguay, near the settlements that bear their names. They lie inland from the Paraná River and are accessible by road from regional centres and from the city of Encarnación.
- UNESCO listing: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 for its well-preserved examples of Jesuit reductions in the Río de la Plata region.
- Visitor access: Both sites are open to visitors and can be toured on day trips from regional towns; guided visits provide the best interpretation of the architecture and history.
What to See #
- La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná: La Santísima Trinidad de Paraná is the larger and better-preserved mission complex, featuring a monumental stone church, carved portals and an extensive plaza laid out for communal ceremonies.
- Jesús de Tavarangue: Jesús de Tavarangue is an unfinished mission site with the remains of a large Baroque-style church and foundations that illustrate the scale intended by 18th-century Jesuit builders.
