Jasmund National Park is a compact national park on the Jasmund peninsula of the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, established to protect ancient beech woodland and dramatic white chalk cliffs. Its most famous feature is the cliff group centered on the Königsstuhl viewpoint.

The park’s signature chalk cliffs rise sharply above the Baltic Sea, with the principal viewing point Königsstuhl reaching about 118 metres above the water and accessed by a network of marked trails. Inland areas preserve fragments of old-growth beech forest that form part of Europe’s transnational beech forest World Heritage.

Jasmund was designated a national park to protect its unique combination of coastal cliffs and beech forest and has been a protected landscape in various forms since late 20th century conservation measures. The conspicuous white cliffs have been a regional landmark for centuries and were popularised in art and literature.

The park occupies the northeastern part of Rügen island on the Baltic Sea coast, north of the town of Sassnitz, and is reached by road and short local approaches from Rügen’s main towns and ferry connections.

  • Visitor centre and best light: The park's chalk cliffs are most dramatic in clear weather and at low sun angles; a visitor centre near the park entrance at Sassnitz provides orientation and trail information.

What to See #

  • Königsstuhl (King's Chair): Königsstuhl is the best-known cliff viewpoint, a chalk promontory rising to about 118 metres above the Baltic Sea and accessed via the park's main trails and a dedicated viewing platform.
  • Ancient beech woodland: Ancient beech forest zones form the inland core of the park and are part of the transnational UNESCO World Heritage listing for Europe's primeval beech forests.

How to Get to Jasmund National Park #

Jasmund National Park is on the Jasmund peninsula of the island of Rügen (Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern), noted for its Königsstuhl chalk cliffs near the town of Sassnitz. Drive from Stralsund to the park area (roughly 30-40 km depending on start point on the mainland); you can also take regional trains to Sassnitz and then a local bus or short taxi to the National Park Centre at Königsstuhl. From the park centre there are waymarked trails and a short walk (around 1-2 km depending on route) to the main cliff viewpoints.

Tips for Visiting Jasmund National Park #

  • Start early and head straight for the Nationalpark-Zentrum Königsstuhl or take the park shuttle in high season-timed access and parking fill up quickly on sunny days.
  • Plan your visit for morning or late afternoon for softer light on the chalk cliffs and significantly fewer visitors than at midday.
  • Take at least one of the marked forest trails beyond the main Königsstuhl viewpoint (for example the Viktoriasicht route) to experience quieter beech-forest scenery and different perspectives of the cliffs.
