Jaromarsburg
Castle Slavic cult site and former fortress on Rügen
On Rügen’s Cape Arkona, Jaromarsburg denotes the site of a medieval Slavic temple-fortress; visitors explore archaeological remains, nearby lighthouses and coastal cliffs reached by road or boat.
Jaromarsburg refers to the medieval Slavic temple-fortress that stood on the promontory of Cape Arkona on the island of Rügen in present-day Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It was a religious and defensive centre for the local Slavic Rani tribe.
The site included a temple complex associated in medieval sources with the god often called Svantevit and fortifications on the cliffed headland. The promontory’s prominent cliffs and sea-facing position made it a strategic and ceremonial location.
Medieval chronicles record that the fortress-temple was stormed and its cult destroyed in 1168 during a Danish campaign, after which the site ceased to function as a pagan religious centre. Archaeological investigations and historic sources document the site’s significance for Baltic Slavic history.
Today the former Jaromarsburg location occupies the northern tip of Rügen at Cape Arkona, where the archaeological area sits beside modern lighthouses and visitor paths and offers dramatic coastal views of the Baltic Sea.
- Destruction in 1168: The fortified temple site at Cape Arkona was captured and its pagan cult destroyed in 1168 during a Danish military expedition, a pivotal event in the Christianisation of the southern Baltic Slavs.
- Prominent coastal location: The site sits on the northern tip of Rügen and is adjacent to visible modern lighthouses and cliffs, making the promontory one of the most visited coastal points on the island.
What to See #
- Temple site (Jaromarsburg): Remains of the temple to the Slavic god often identified as Svantevit were located on the promontory; the temple itself and associated cult structures were recorded in medieval chronicles before their destruction in the 12th century.
- Cape Arkona and lighthouses: The Cape Arkona promontory and surrounding cliffs form the physical setting of the former Jaromarsburg; modern lighthouses and visitor paths now sit close to the archaeological area on the northern tip of the island of Rügen.
