Iwokrama Forest

Iwokrama Forest is a large protected rainforest area in central Guyana managed through the Iwokrama International Centre for conservation and research, formally established in the 1990s. It is a significant intact block of tropical forest in the Potaro-Siparuni region and a site for long-term ecological study.

The site includes a canopy walkway and observation platforms that provide elevated views of the forest and wildlife, guided wildlife- and river-based tours, and research activities focused on biodiversity and sustainable use. The forest supports large mammals and diverse bird life and is used for both scientific research and low-impact ecotourism.

The area was set aside for conservation and scientific management under a public-private arrangement in the late 20th century, with ongoing programs for community engagement, biodiversity monitoring, and sustainable livelihoods. Management emphasizes research, training, and controlled tourism rather than intensive development.

Iwokrama sits in central Guyana’s Potaro-Siparuni region amid intact rainforest, savanna transition zones, and river corridors. The landscape is remote and accessed by long overland drives and guided river routes from populated centers in Guyana.

• Access: Access is by unpaved roads and guided trips are recommended because facilities are limited and the area is managed for conservation and research.
