Itter Castle
Castle Austrian castle famous for 1945 battle and preservation
Perched above a Tyrolean valley, Itter Castle offers medieval rooms, Alpine views and a museum recounting the unusual 1945 battle; many visitors stay in its hotel or join guided history tours.
Schloss Itter is a small medieval castle in Tyrol, Austria, notable for a unique World War II engagement in May 1945. The structure dates back to the medieval period and retains a fortified keep and chapel.
Tour visitors see the restored keep, chapel, and a compact museum in the courtyard that interprets the castle’s wartime story and local history. The site is walkable from the village below and provides panoramic views across the Inn valley and surrounding alpine slopes.
The castle originated in the medieval era and passed through local noble ownership over centuries. In early May 1945 it served as a prison for prominent French detainees and became the scene of the Battle for Castle Itter on 5 May 1945, when US forces, freed French prisoners and elements of the German military defended the site against an assault by SS troops.
The castle stands above the village of Itter in Tyrol, in western Austria, within reach of the towns of Wörgl and Kufstein and surrounded by the lower slopes of the Kitzbühel Alps.
- Battle of Itter: Holds the only known documented engagement in which US troops and released French prisoners fought alongside German soldiers against SS forces on 5 May 1945.
- Viewpoint: Sits on a hill with clear views over the Inn valley and nearby Kitzbühel Alps, making the castle easily visible from the surrounding village.
What to See #
- Main castle complex: Occupies a hilltop site above the village of Itter with a fortified keep, a small chapel, and an inner courtyard that now displays artifacts and exhibits about the castle's wartime history.
- Chapel: A small chapel within the castle contains memorials and period features dating to premodern renovations of the building.
- Courtyard and museum rooms: The courtyard and ground-floor rooms are used to present the castle's role in the final days of World War II and to display local historic objects.

Public transport: regional buses serve Wörgl; from there a short taxi ride or regional bus connects to Itter.
Tips for Visiting Itter Castle #
- The castle is a private property and is not always open to the public - check local listings or the Tyrol tourism office before making a special trip.
- Photograph the view down the Inn valley from the terrace: the light is best in the hour before sunset.
- Ask a local guide about the 1945 battle; the human stories (who was interned, who defended the place) are better told by people who grew up nearby than by plaques.
