Main image

Palazzo Madama is a historic palace located on Piazza Madama in central Rome that houses the Senate of the Italian Republic. The building incorporates medieval towers and later Renaissance and Baroque additions and has been adapted as a parliamentary building since the 19th century.

Architectural elements include an older medieval core with fortification remnants and an ornate later facade; interior rooms contain offices, meeting chambers and formal state spaces associated with legislative functions. The palace’s name derives from the Italian word for noble ladies who once owned or resided in the building during the Renaissance era.

The building became the seat of the national Senate after the unification of Italy and the move of the capital to Rome in the late 19th century, and it continues to serve that function today.

Palazzo Madama stands in the civic heart of Rome between Piazza Navona and the Corso, easily reached on foot from central tourist routes.

  • Current use: Since Italian unification the building has served as the seat of the Italian Senate, making it an active centre of national government.

How to Get to Palazzo Madama #

Palazzo Madama (the seat of the Italian Senate) is in Rome’s historic centre at Piazza Madama, a short walk from Piazza Navona. The easiest public route is tram line 8 to Largo di Torre Argentina, then a 2-5 minute walk to Piazza Madama; several central bus routes (including routes serving Largo di Torre Argentina) also stop within a few minutes’ walk.

From Roma Termini it is a short taxi ride (10-15 minutes depending on traffic) or a longer walk through the centre; driving in the immediate area is limited and parking is usually in nearby garages.

Tips for Visiting Palazzo Madama #

  • Palazzo Madama is the seat of the Italian Senate, so interior access is restricted and subject to parliamentary sittings - book guided tours well in advance and be prepared to show ID when tours are confirmed.
  • Approach from Piazza Navona to appreciate the layered medieval and Renaissance façades; many visitors miss the palace's sculptural details and the small decorative courtyard glimpsed from the square.
  • If interior visits aren't available, time an exterior visit early or late in the day to avoid the busiest tourist hours and to photograph the façade with fewer people in the square.
