Isola Madre
Island Borromean island with historic palace and botanical gardens
On Lake Maggiore, Isola Madre features a Borromean villa and century‑old botanical gardens; visitors come by boat for guided tours, peacocks and period interiors.
Isola Madre is the largest of the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore in Piedmont, Italy, and is known for its palazzo and extensive historic botanical gardens. The island is managed by the Borromeo family and is open to visitors for guided walks around the palace and gardened terraces.
Garden features include rare and subtropical plantings laid out across stepped terraces, formal paths and woodland areas; the grounds are notable for their size and for ornamental birds such as peacocks. The palazzo contains family collections and period rooms linked to the island’s long ownership by the Borromeo noble family.
The island has been developed and landscaped over several centuries, with major garden formations dating to the 18th and 19th centuries when the Borromeo family consolidated their lakeside estates.
It sits in the central part of Lake Maggiore, a short boat ride from Stresa and other lakeside towns.
