Isola di Pantelleria

Isola di Pantelleria is a volcanic island in the Strait of Sicily that forms part of the Sicilian region of Italy. The island is characterised by volcanic landforms, thermal springs, and a distinctive vernacular architecture of thick-walled stone houses known as dammusi.

Natural highlights include the thermal lake called the Specchio di Venere (Lake of Venus), sea caves and coastal rock formations, while agricultural traditions focus on caper cultivation and the production of sweet zibibbo wines. The island’s landscape is dry and rugged with terraces and evidence of long-term human cultivation adapted to scarce rainfall.

Pantelleria’s history includes long settlement by Mediterranean peoples; its strategic position between Sicily and North Africa has shaped its cultural and economic links. Today it is a seasonal tourist destination reached by ferry or air services from Sicily.

It lies in the Strait of Sicily, closer to the Tunisian coast than to mainland Sicily, and is the largest of a small group of islands in that maritime corridor.
