Isola Comacina

Isola Comacina is a small island in the western branch of Lake Como, northern Italy, known for its archaeological remains and historic associations. It is the only true island on the lake and has been inhabited at various times since antiquity.

Remains on the island include foundations of medieval buildings and church ruins clustered around the highest ground; visitors commonly see masonry ruins, a small harbour area, and traces of past settlements. The island is compact and typically visited on short boat trips from nearby lakeside villages.

The island has a long history of settlement and conflict; it was an important local centre in the early and medieval periods and was attacked and depopulated during medieval conflicts between Como and surrounding powers. Over time it has shifted from permanent habitation to seasonal and touristic uses.

Isola Comacina lies off the western shore of Lake Como close to Ossuccio and Lenno, within the lake’s narrow western arm, and is reached by short boat transfers from nearby lakeside towns.
