Island of Brehat
Island Scenic Breton archipelago with granite coastline
Accessible by ferry from the Brittany coast, Île de Bréhat has car-free paths, pink granite shores and small gardens; visitors walk coastal trails and take day trips from Paimpol.
The Island of Bréhat is a small archipelago off the northern coast of Brittany in the Côtes-d’Armor department. It is known for its granite islets, coastal walking paths and a largely car-free environment.
The archipelago’s mild maritime climate and sheltered bays support a variety of coastal flora and small harbours used by local fishing and leisure craft. The main inhabited island is served by short ferry crossings from the nearby mainland and is a popular day-trip destination for visitors to the northern Brittany coast.
Historically the islands have been used for fishing and small-scale agriculture; more recently tourism and nature conservation have become the primary uses. The islands lie close to the town of Paimpol and other ports on the northern Brittany shoreline.
- Car-free island: No private cars are allowed on the main inhabited island, making foot and bicycle travel the primary means of getting around.
- Ferry access: Regular passenger ferries connect the island to the nearby mainland, with frequent seasonal services from ports on the Côtes-d'Armor coast.
How to Get to Island of Brehat #
Île de Bréhat is accessed by passenger ferry from the Pointe de l’Arcouest (Le Passage) at Ploubazlanec, near the town of Paimpol on the northern Brittany coast. Drive to the parking area at the Arcouest ferry terminal and take the short ferry crossing to the island (the island is car‑free).
On arrival the quays are a short walk from the main villages and trails; most visitors explore the island on foot or by bicycle.
Tips for Visiting Island of Brehat #
- Take the first passenger ferry from Pointe de l'Arcouest (Ploubazlanec) to Île‑de‑Bréhat to arrive before the day‑trip crowds; early and late visits are noticeably calmer than mid‑day in summer.
- Land at the island's main disembarkation point and follow the coastal walking circuit to see the highlights; because there are no cars most movement concentrates near the ferry, so head clockwise to reach quieter coves.
- Many visitors miss the northern islets, tide‑cut rock pools and the island's sheltered eastern paths-explore those away from the main village for better light and fewer people.
