Main image

Isla de los Estados is a rugged, largely uninhabited Argentine island lying off the eastern tip of Tierra del Fuego in the South Atlantic. It is noted for its remoteness, dramatic coastline and historical associations with lighthouses and shipwrecks.

The island offers steep cliffs, sheltered coves, seabird colonies and limited landing sites used by expedition ships. Naturalists and small-number expedition cruises visit for wildlife observation and to view historic sites along the coast.

The island has a history of lighthouse construction and maritime rescue activity tied to the hazardous waters surrounding Tierra del Fuego and has been referenced in literature and maritime accounts. It has no significant permanent civilian population.

Located east of the main islands of Tierra del Fuego, the island is administered by Tierra del Fuego Province, Argentina, and lies in the subantarctic waters of the South Atlantic.

  • Access limitations: Landing and on-shore access are usually limited to expedition cruises and licensed vessels because seas can be rough and the island is largely uninhabited.

What to See #

  • Historic lighthouse site: A remote lighthouse and associated ruins on the island's eastern promontory that inspired Jules Verne's novel "The Lighthouse at the End of the World"; access to the site is often subject to weather and conservation limits.

How to Get to Isla de los Estados #

The usual gateway is Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego). Expedition vessels and charter boats depart the port of Ushuaia; crossings are long (often 8-12 hours each way depending on weather and route). Operators vary seasonally (mainly December-March). There is no regular ferry service; private charters are the practical option.

Tips for Visiting Isla de los Estados #

  • Book a licensed expedition from Ushuaia - independent landings are sometimes restricted by park authorities.
  • Bring foul-weather gear and binoculars; landings can be wet and wind can be relentless.
  • If the goal is the old lighthouse site, confirm with the operator whether a Zodiac landing is included - not every boat stops.
  • Pay attention to wildlife: southern elephant seals haul out on the beaches and bottlenose dolphins sometimes escort boats.

Best Time to Visit Isla de los Estados #

Visit in the austral summer for safer sea crossings and the best chance of setting foot ashore; weather controls access more than anything else.

Southern summer
December-March · 2°C to 10°C
Calmer seas and the best chance of landing; long daylight hours for exploring beaches and cliffs.
Shoulder seasons
October-November, April-May · -1°C to 8°C
Colder and windier, but fewer expedition boats; more chance of dramatic weather.
