Isla Barú
Island Caribbean island near Cartagena with beaches
A Caribbean isle off Cartagena, Barú is popular for Playa Blanca’s white sand, day trips, seafood and snorkeling along nearby coral edges.
An island and peninsula area off the coast of Cartagena in Bolívar Department, Colombia, known nationally for its beaches and tourism. It is one of the closest beach destinations to Cartagena and is a major day-trip destination.
Sandy beaches and reef-fringed shallows are the primary draws, with one well-known beach that hosts most day-tour activity. Snorkeling around nearby coral and boat trips to adjacent islets are common, and there are numerous small hotels, restaurants, and beach clubs that cater to visitors.
The Barú area developed as a fishing and agricultural zone and expanded its tourism role in the 20th and 21st centuries with more frequent boat services and beach-focused businesses. Tourism infrastructure grew around the island’s best beaches rather than a single historical site.
Sits off the southern entrance to Cartagena’s bay in northern Colombia, part of the Bolívar Department and accessible by water or by road across the Barú peninsula from Cartagena.
- Access: Day trips from Cartagena commonly take about 45 minutes by speedboat or 30-60 minutes by ferry, depending on service and route.

What to See #
- Playa Blanca: A broad white-sand beach on the island's northern shore known for shallow, clear water and frequent day-trip snorkeling; it is the best-known single visitor spot on Barú.
