Main image

Isla Apipé is one of a group of river islands in the Paraná River within Corrientes Province, Argentina. The Apipé islands form part of an archipelago of riverine landforms situated close to the international frontier with Paraguay.

The islands are low, riverine landmasses characterized by wetlands, riparian vegetation and seasonal flooding associated with the Paraná River. They are used primarily for extensive grazing and support riverine wildlife and birdlife.

Control of the islands follows bilateral boundary arrangements, and their location in the middle of the river creates a distinctive jurisdictional pattern where Argentine territory lies amid Paraguayan river channels. Access is by boat from the Corrientes mainland.

Isla Apipé lies in the Paraná River in northeastern Argentina’s Corrientes Province, close to the international border with Paraguay and downstream of major river channels that define the frontier.

  • Boundary peculiarity: The Apipé islands are located in the Paraná River near the Argentina-Paraguay boundary and are Argentine territory surrounded by Paraguayan waters, creating an unusual international boundary situation.
