Isabela Island is the largest island in the Galápagos archipelago and is formed by the joining of six shield volcanoes, producing an elongated, volcanic landmass that dominates the western part of the group. The island supports a range of Galápagos habitats and endemic species, notably several giant tortoise populations.

Isabela formed through successive volcanic eruptions as separate volcanoes merged to create a single large island; human settlement is concentrated in a few coastal villages, with Puerto Villamil the main visitor hub. Conservation management under the Galápagos National Park has regulated tourism and scientific work for decades.

Isabela lies in the western Galápagos, west of Santa Cruz and roughly on the equator in the Pacific Ocean; the island’s main settlement, Puerto Villamil, is on the southern shore and acts as the entry point for most visitor activities.

  • Size and geology: Isabela is the largest island in the Galápagos archipelago and is formed by the coalescence of six shield volcanoes, giving it a highly volcanic landscape.
  • Access and regulations: Accessible by boat from nearby islands and by small aircraft to a local airstrip; visitor activities are regulated by the Galápagos National Park to protect wildlife and habitats.

What to See #

  • Volcanic complex: Volcanic complex - formed by six main shield volcanoes including Wolf and Sierra Negra, which define the island's rugged topography and are active or historically active.
  • Puerto Villamil: Puerto Villamil - the principal settlement on the island, located on the southern shore and serving as the visitor hub with lodgings and boat access.
  • Tortoise areas: Tortoise habitats and breeding areas - locations where several distinct giant tortoise populations are found and where conservation work is concentrated.

How to Get to Isabela Island (Galápagos) #

Isabela Island is reached by inter‑island connections from the main Galápagos hubs. Typical routes: fly from Quito or Guayaquil to Baltra or San Cristóbal, then take an inter‑island speedboat from Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz) to Puerto Villamil on Isabela (commonly about 2-3 hours) or use a connecting local flight where available. The main village (Puerto Villamil) is a short walk from the boat dock.

Tips for Visiting Isabela Island (Galápagos) #

  • Take the earliest inter‑island boat from Puerto Ayora to Puerto Villamil (or the first regional flight into Isabela) to avoid rough seas and the day's visitor rush and to have better conditions for hiking Sierra Negra.
  • Book guided excursions with Galápagos‑certified guides and use official landing sites-many special spots (Concha de Perla snorkeling, Vicente Roca Point) are accessible only by organized boat trips and are strictly regulated.
  • Don't skip the Sierra Negra volcano hike in the highlands early in the morning for crater views before clouds roll in; visitors who limit themselves to the coast miss the island's volcanic landscapes and unique endemic species inland.
