Isabela Island (Galápagos)

Isabela Island is the largest island in the Galápagos archipelago and is formed by the joining of six shield volcanoes, producing an elongated, volcanic landmass that dominates the western part of the group. The island supports a range of Galápagos habitats and endemic species, notably several giant tortoise populations.

Isabela formed through successive volcanic eruptions as separate volcanoes merged to create a single large island; human settlement is concentrated in a few coastal villages, with Puerto Villamil the main visitor hub. Conservation management under the Galápagos National Park has regulated tourism and scientific work for decades.

Isabela lies in the western Galápagos, west of Santa Cruz and roughly on the equator in the Pacific Ocean; the island’s main settlement, Puerto Villamil, is on the southern shore and acts as the entry point for most visitor activities.
