Iron Gate
Valley Dramatic Danube gorge forming Romania–Serbia border
The Danube’s gorge between Serbia and Romania, cut through the Carpathians and hosting the Iron Gate hydroelectric complex. River cruises, cycling routes and roadside viewpoints bring visitors to the dramatic river corridor.
The Iron Gate is a major gorge on the Danube River where the river cuts through the Carpathian and Balkan mountain ranges, forming a natural frontier between Serbia and Romania. It is a key geographic and historic passage on the Danube and contains dramatic cliffs, a hydroelectric complex and important archaeological sites.
The area includes steep limestone cliffs and a narrowed river channel that extends for several tens of kilometres, a large hydroelectric dam completed in the early 1970s, and riverside fortifications and settlements that line the gorge. Notable cultural and visitor sites include medieval Golubac Fortress and the prehistoric settlement of Lepenski Vir with occupation dated to roughly 7000-6000 BCE.
Construction of the Iron Gates I dam and power station was a major mid-20th-century engineering project carried out jointly by Yugoslavia and Romania; the dam altered local navigation and created a reservoir through the gorge. The gorge has been a strategic trade and transit route since antiquity and has repeatedly appeared in regional history because of its control over Danube navigation.
The gorge straddles the Serbia-Romania border along the lower Danube in eastern Serbia, within and adjacent to Đerdap National Park. It lies roughly east of Belgrade and is accessed from towns such as Donji Milanovac and Kladovo on the Serbian side.
- Best viewpoint: Boat cruises and river tours run along the gorge and provide the clearest views of the constricted Danube channel and cliff faces.
