Ioannina Castle
Castle Medieval castle overlooking Ioannina and Pamvotis Lake
Ioannina Castle overlooks Lake Pamvotis and the city’s old quarter, containing Ottoman-era buildings, museums and ramparts. Visitors tour the castle complex, mosques and local silverwork displays.
Ioannina Castle is a fortified complex on the peninsula of Ioannina in Epirus, northwestern Greece, with a core that dates back to the Byzantine period (early medieval era). It is one of the main historic landmarks of the city and contains surviving medieval and Ottoman-era structures.
The castle compound contains long stretches of stone ramparts, inner wards and an Ottoman-era urban quarter. Highlights include the 17th-century Aslan Pasha Mosque, museum displays inside the mosque building, and multiple viewpoints that look over Lake Pamvotis and the old town. The defensive circuit and urban spaces are compact enough to explore on foot in 1-2 hours.
The site was established in the Byzantine era and was expanded and modified under later rulers, including substantial Ottoman-period rebuilding and repairs. Local notables including Ali Pasha of Tepelena added structures and used the castle as an administrative and military center in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The castle sits on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis within Ioannina city limits, a short walk from the modern centre. The surrounding landscape is urban on the landward side and opens onto the lake to the south and east.
- Best time to visit: Best light for photography is late afternoon when walls and lake views are illuminated from the west.
- Combine with lake visit: Entry routes run from the old town; combine a castle visit with a short boat trip to the nearby island on Lake Pamvotis for a full day.
What to See #
- Aslan Pasha Mosque: A 17th-century Ottoman mosque inside the castle that now houses a municipal museum of local ethnography and crafts.
- Ottoman quarter (inside the castle): A dense cluster of narrow streets and stone houses dating largely to the Ottoman period, located inside the castle enclosure and showing the urban layout of the old town.
- Walls and viewpoints: Stone ramparts and walkways around the castle perimeter that provide panoramic views over the old town and Lake Pamvotis.
