Ingapirca
Archaeological Site Pre-Columbian Inca stone ruins and temple complex
Ingapirca contains Ecuador’s largest Inca ruins-stone temples, the Temple of the Sun and agricultural terraces-visited for archaeology, Andean views and local Quechua communities.
Ingapirca is the largest Inca archaeological complex in Ecuador, located in Cañar Province, and notable for a stone temple and associated Inca and pre-Inca structures. The complex includes finely cut stonework and terraces arranged on a high ridge, reflecting both Cañari and later Inca construction.
Key on-site elements include an elliptical ceremonial structure commonly called the Temple of the Sun, large courtyard areas, storage and habitation compound remains, and agricultural terraces. Visitors explore restored walls, pathways and a small museum that displays archaeological finds and explains the site’s mixed cultural heritage.
Ingapirca developed first under the Cañari peoples and was significantly modified by the Incas during the 15th century as they expanded into the region; the site later saw Spanish contact in the 16th century and subsequent decline. Excavation and conservation work in the 20th century established its layout and chronology.
The complex sits on a ridge in the highlands of Cañar Province along the Pan-American corridor in southern Ecuador, between the larger cities of Cuenca and Riobamba, and is accessible by road.
- Significance: The site is the largest known Inca archaeological complex in Ecuador and shows a mix of Cañari and Inca architectural techniques and layouts.
- Access and interpretation: A visitor centre and on-site museum provide context and display recovered artefacts; the site is accessible from the Pan-American Highway and has a paved approach road.
What to See #
- Temple of the Sun (Templo del Sol): An imposing elliptical stone structure interpreted as the Inca Temple of the Sun, featuring finely cut ashlar masonry and a semicircular niche that faces northwest.
- Ancillary structures and terraces: Residential and administrative compound ruins including storage buildings, terraces, and retained stone foundations that reflect Inca and earlier Cañari occupation over several centuries.

Ingapirca archaeological complex (Cañar Province) is reached by road from nearby towns and from Cuenca. Tips for Visiting Ingapirca #
- Arrive soon after opening to explore the Temple of the Sun and the Inca stonework with fewer visitors and softer light on the carved stones.
- Start at the on-site visitor center and small museum to see artifacts and get orientation before walking the terraces and the main Inca structures-many visitors skip the museum and miss important context.
- Walk the peripheral paths and terraces around the main complex; the quieter outer ruins and agricultural terraces give a fuller sense of the site's scale that many day‑visitors overlook.
