Imperial Museum of Brazil

The Museu Imperial in Petrópolis is a national museum housed in the former Imperial Palace built for Brazil’s monarchy in the 19th century. It preserves objects, furniture and archival material associated with Emperor Pedro II and the Brazilian imperial family.

The palace’s ceremonial Throne Room, the preserved private apartments, portrait galleries and a collection of personal effects from the imperial household. The surrounding palace gardens are part of the site and reflect 19th-century landscaping around an official residence.

The palace was constructed in the 19th century as the imperial family’s summer residence in Petrópolis and later converted to a museum in the 20th century to preserve the material history of Brazil’s monarchy.
