Imeri Gramvousa
Island Small Cretan islet with abandoned Venetian fortress
Off Crete’s northwest coast, Imeri Gramvousa is known for a Venetian-era fortress ruin, turquoise coves and boat excursions from Kissamos that combine swimming, snorkeling and short hikes to the fort.
Imeri Gramvousa is a small uninhabited islet off the northwestern coast of Crete, Greece, notable for its ruined Venetian fortress constructed in the 16th century.
The islet is commonly visited on coastal excursions that also stop at nearby Balos Lagoon. A sheltered landing and a small pebbly beach serve day visitors, and a steep stone stairway leads up to the fortress ruins offering panoramic sea views.
The fortress was built by Venetian authorities in the 16th century and later saw use by pirates and local fighters before falling into ruin; the island has remained largely uninhabited since the 19th century.
Geographically it sits just off the Gramvousa peninsula at the northwestern tip of Crete, near the town of Kissamos and adjacent to the Balos Lagoon on Crete’s Chania coast.
- Access: Most day-trip boat services depart from the port of Kissamos (Kastelli) and combine Gramvousa with Balos Lagoon on the same excursion.
- Fortress climb: A stone stairway climbs from the landing to the fortress ruins; the route is steep and exposed but offers the island's main viewpoints.
- Viewing point: Best views are from the fortress ramparts, which look across the Balos Lagoon and the Gulf of Kissamos on clear days.

- Venetian fortress: Ruined fortification built by Venetian authorities in the 16th century; walls, stairways and ruined rooms occupy the island's highest point and provide panoramic views over Balos Lagoon and the Gulf of Kissamos.
- Landing bay: Small sheltered landing on the island's eastern side where excursion boats put ashore; gives direct access to the pebble beach and the path up to the fortress.
- Beach and shoreline: Pebbly beach at a sheltered cove adjacent to the landing; used for swimming and short shoreline exploration on day trips.
