Imbabura is a volcanic edifice formed in the Andean volcanic arc; it is not known for recent eruptive activity in historical times and is treated as a dormant volcano in geological summaries.
The volcano rises within Imbabura Province in northern Ecuador, overlooking the towns of Otavalo and Ibarra and the highland lake district that lies north of Quito.

- Allow acclimatisation time-summit trails reach over 4,600 metres and altitude can be unforgiving.
