Ilovik
Island Small Adriatic island known for fragrant vegetation
A small Adriatic island near Lošinj, Ilovik serves day-trippers and boaters with pebble bays, walking paths, palm-lined streets and seafood taverns in village harbors.
Ilovik is a small Adriatic island in Croatia’s Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, known locally as a lush, gardened island with a small permanent population. It lies in the Kvarner Gulf south of Mali Lošinj and is a quiet, largely car-free destination.
The island’s compact harbour village, sheltered bays and coastal paths are the main attractions, with many small pebble beaches and shaded promenades. Plantings of pine, olive and ornamental trees give Ilovik a green, cultivated character uncommon on some Adriatic islands.
Ilovik’s settlement pattern has long centred on maritime activities, fishing and small-scale agriculture; over time tourism has become an important part of the local economy while retaining the island’s low-density village character.
Ilovik sits in the northern Adriatic off the Croatian coast, south of the larger island of Lošinj and within easy ferry distance of Mali Lošinj and other islands in the archipelago. Boats from nearby ports provide the main access.
- Island of Flowers: Ilovik is commonly called the "Island of Flowers" for its dense Mediterranean gardens and aromatic planting, and regular ferries connect it to Mali Lošinj and the nearby islands.
What to See #
- Main village: The main harbour village forms the island's focal point with a small quay and clustered stone houses facing the sheltered bay.
- Sveti Petar islet: The nearby islet of Sveti Petar lies immediately off the main harbour and is linked visually and historically to Ilovik's settlement and cemetery.
How to Get to Ilovik #
Ilovik is a small Adriatic island reached only by boat. Regular passenger ferries and seasonal catamarans call at Ilovik’s main harbor from Mali Lošinj (the nearest larger town on the island of Lošinj); from Mali Lošinj the crossing is a short island hop and the landing is at the village pier (no long walks from the pier to the settlement). To get to Mali Lošinj you drive or take intercity buses from the Croatian mainland and then use local boat connections to Ilovik.
Tips for Visiting Ilovik #
- Take the early morning ferry from Mali Lošinj (check the Jadrolinija/local schedules) to avoid the mid-day day-tripper rush and give yourself a full afternoon on the island.
- Use the main Ilovik harbour as your arrival point-everything is within easy walking distance so plan your itinerary around the small village quay rather than trying to arrange vehicle transfers.
- Don't miss the west-facing viewpoints and the village promenade at sunset; many visitors only visit the beaches and miss the island's coastal walking routes and small coves to the west.
Best Time to Visit Ilovik #
