How to Get to Ilhéus
Ilhéus in Bahia has Jorge Amado Airport (IOS) for regional flights and good intercity bus links to Salvador and neighbouring towns. There's no passenger rail service; buses are the main way to arrive overland and to move between regional destinations.
Ilhéus-Jorge Amado Airport (IOS): Ilhéus has its own airport (IOS) with regional flights, mainly to and from Salvador (SSA) and other Bahia hubs. From IOS the city centre is about 15-25 minutes by road; taxis cost roughly R$15-R$35 and take about 15-25 minutes depending on traffic. Local airport vans and moto-taxis are also available for shorter rides.
Hercílio Luz / Salvador (SSA): For more international connections you’ll commonly arrive in Salvador (Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães - SSA) and then take a long-distance bus or a connecting flight to Ilhéus. Road travel from Salvador to Ilhéus is about 6-8 hours by bus; expect intercity bus fares in the region of R$60-R$150 depending on operator and service class.
Train: There is no regular passenger rail service to Ilhéus; rail travel is not a practical option.
Bus: The Rodoviária (bus terminal) in Ilhéus has frequent long-distance bus services to Salvador, Itabuna, Porto Seguro and other cities in Bahia and the wider region. Buses to Salvador typically take 6-8 hours; local and regional buses and vans connect nearby towns in 30-90 minutes depending on route. Fares vary by operator and class (economy vs executive) but expect R$30-R$150 for common intercity routes.
How to Get Around Ilhéus #
Ilhéus’s historic centre is walkable for sightseeing, cafés and restaurants. To reach the more distant beaches and resorts, take local buses, moto-táxis or taxis; many visitors rent a car for flexibility along the coast. Short taxi rides within town are usually inexpensive; bus connections run to nearby towns (including Itabuna). Expect some gaps in service outside peak seasons and bring sunscreen for beach transfers.
