Ilha Grande is a heavily forested island off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil known for beaches, hiking and Atlantic Forest ecosystems. It is a popular destination for eco-tourism and beach recreation.

Beaches such as Lopes Mendes, coastal trails and a network of walking paths attract day-trippers and overnight visitors; the main village, Vila do Abraão, is the island’s transport and visitor hub. Boat access from Angra dos Reis, Mangaratiba and other mainland points is the normal arrival method.

The island was used as a penal colony in the 19th and 20th centuries; prison facilities operated until late in the 20th century and have since been closed. Large parts of the island are now protected as a state park.

Ilha Grande lies off the Costa Verde of Rio de Janeiro state between the municipalities of Angra dos Reis and Mangaratiba, reachable by regular boat services from the mainland.

  • No cars: Motor vehicles are largely prohibited on the island, so access is by boat and most travel is on foot or by local boat taxi.

What to See #

  • Vila do Abraão: The village that functions as the island's main port and service centre, with trails, restaurants and boat connections to the mainland.
  • Lopes Mendes Beach: A long, white-sand beach famed for swimming and surfing access by boat or trail from the interior; it is one of the island's most visited beaches.
  • Ilha Grande State Park: A protected area covering much of the island's interior, established to conserve Atlantic Forest habitats and endemic species.

How to Get to Ilha Grande #

Ilha Grande (Rio de Janeiro state) is car-free and reached by boat from the mainland. The most common embarkation points are Angra dos Reis, Mangaratiba, and Conceição de Jacareí (the latter serving the main village Vila do Abraão). From Rio de Janeiro city you can drive to one of these ports (roughly 150-170 km depending on route and traffic) and then take a ferry or speedboat to the island.

Ferries and private boats land at Vila do Abraão and other island piers; from the pier most destinations on the island are within a short walk or a local boat transfer.

Tips for Visiting Ilha Grande #

  • Catch one of the first boats of the day to Vila do Abraão (the island's main gateway) - early arrivals avoid the peak of daytrippers from Angra or Mangaratiba.
  • Stay overnight on the island rather than doing a day trip; evening and early-morning hours are far quieter on popular beaches like Lopes Mendes.
  • Explore trails west of Abraão and smaller coves away from the main beach: many visitors stick to the central beaches and miss quieter bays and viewpoints inland.
