Ilha Fiscal

Ilha Fiscal is a small island in Guanabara Bay, off the central waterfront of Rio de Janeiro, noted for its late 19th century neo-Gothic palace. The island’s palace was built for fiscal and customs functions and is one of the bay’s distinctive historic buildings.

The main attraction is the palace itself, with preserved period interiors and exhibition rooms that interpret the site’s role in the imperial era. Short boat trips from the port provide direct access and visitors often combine the stop with wider bay sightseeing.

The palace was completed in the late 19th century and served fiscal and ceremonial functions during the final years of the monarchy; it became famous for hosting a grand imperial ball on 9 November 1889. Since the 20th century the building has been used for exhibitions and public visits under naval or heritage administration.
