Île d’Yeu is an island off the Vendée coast in western France, part of the Pays de la Loire region, known for a mix of rocky Atlantic coastline, sandy beaches and a concentrated main harbour settlement. It has a long maritime history and a distinct local culture.
The island’s principal settlement is Port‑Joinville, which handles ferry services, shops and visitor facilities; the west coast is rockier with cliffs and coastal paths, while sheltered beaches lie on the leeward side. Notable island features include a historic château and coastal fortifications that date from medieval and later centuries.
Historically the island was fortified in medieval and early modern periods and has been a fishing, naval and small‑scale maritime community for centuries; today it is a popular day‑trip and holiday destination for mainland visitors.
Île d’Yeu lies about 20 kilometres offshore from the Vendée coast and is accessed by ferry from nearby mainland ports; the island is administratively part of the Vendée department.
- Size and access: Covers about 23 square kilometres and lies roughly 20 kilometres off the Vendée coast, reachable by regular ferries and seasonal fast services from mainland ports.
- Ferry connections: Port‑Joinville is the island's transport hub; vehicle and passenger ferries run from several Vendée ports, and the crossing time varies by harbour and vessel type.

- Port‑Joinville: The island's main harbour and settlement, offering ferry connections, visitor services, accommodation and the principal point of arrival for most visitors.
- Château de l'Île d'Yeu: A fortified castle on the island dating from medieval and Renaissance phases that occupies a rocky promontory and is a local museum and landmark.
