IJsselmonde (island)

IJsselmonde is a river island in South Holland, Netherlands, defined by the rivers Nieuwe Maas, Oude Maas and the Noord. It forms a continuous suburban and semi-rural area immediately south of central Rotterdam.

The island includes multiple towns and residential boroughs with parks, cycling routes and local waterfronts. Much of the area is low-lying polder landscape, with a mix of built suburbs and agricultural land; it is used day-to-day as a commuter and residential zone rather than as a single tourist attraction.

River engineering and dike-building over centuries created and stabilised the island’s present shape; urbanisation accelerated in the 20th century as Rotterdam expanded southward. Local municipal boundaries have changed several times as towns grew and merged into larger municipalities.

Geographically it sits in the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta, directly south of central Rotterdam and within easy reach of the city by bridge and public transit. The island is part of the densely populated South Holland province and lies at low elevation among the delta rivers.

• Rotterdam borough IJsselmonde: Contains the Rotterdam borough also named IJsselmonde on the northwestern edge, which links directly across the Nieuwe Maas to central Rotterdam by road and public transit.
• River boundaries: Bounded by the rivers Nieuwe Maas, Oude Maas and the Noord, with extensive polder and riverine landscapes used for agriculture and suburban development.
