Iguaçu National Park

Park Biosphere reserve containing massive Iguazu waterfalls

Iguaçu National Park protects the Brazilian side of the Iguazu Falls system, offering walkway viewpoints, rainforest trails and boat excursions beneath cascades; visitors come for waterfall panoramas, wildlife and guided park circuits.

Iguaçu National Park (Parque Nacional do Iguaçu) protects the Brazilian side of the Iguazu/Iguazú falls complex on the border between Brazil and Argentina in Paraná state. The park includes extensive rainforest and the riverine canyons that contain the iconic waterfalls.

The site contains part of one of the world’s largest waterfall systems, with roughly 275 separate drops stretching approximately 2.7 km along the river and maximum drops of about 82 m. Elevated walkways and viewing platforms on the Brazilian side concentrate on panoramic overlooks and the dramatic viewpoint at the Devil’s Throat (Garganta do Diabo).

Boat excursions and regulated river trips can take visitors close to some lower falls, while park trails and the visitor centre provide access to wildlife viewing and educational exhibits about the surrounding Atlantic forest. The park is internationally famous and receives large numbers of visitors year-round.

The Brazilian national park was created in the 20th century to conserve the falls and adjacent rainforest and later became part of a transboundary UNESCO World Heritage listing shared with Argentina. Management has focused on balancing visitor infrastructure with rainforest conservation.

Located in western Paraná state near the city of Foz do Iguaçu, the park sits at the tri-border region of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay and is accessed from major roads and the nearby urban area of Foz do Iguaçu.

  • Falls statistics: The falls system comprises around 275 separate drops stretching roughly 2.7 km across the border with Argentina, with maximum single-drop heights around 82 m.
  • UNESCO status and border crossing: The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Brazilian park was established to protect both the falls and surrounding Atlantic rainforest; crossing to the Argentine side requires passport and border controls.

What to See #

  • Devil's Throat (Garganta do Diabo): A U-shaped chasm forming the largest single drop in the falls system; the viewpoint is reached by an elevated walkway and offers panoramic views where multiple falls converge.
  • Boardwalks and viewing platforms: A network of boardwalks, elevated walkways and viewing platforms that run along the Brazilian side of the falls, providing access to panoramic and close-up views of many of the 275 individual drops.

How to Get to Iguaçu National Park #

Iguaçu National Park (Brazilian side) is reached from the city of Foz do Iguaçu. From Foz do Iguaçu you can take local buses or organized shuttles from the city bus terminal or the airport to the park entrance, or drive/taxi the roughly 15-25 km route into the national park; parking and the park visitor complex are adjacent to the main Brazilian entrance.

Tips for Visiting Iguaçu National Park #

  • Start at the Brazilian side (Foz do Iguaçu) early in the morning for the broad panoramic views and to beat the largest tour-group rush; late afternoon on the Argentine side can be quieter and gives closer, immersive walkways like the Devil's Throat.
  • If you want a boat experience, book the Macuco Safari (Brazilian side) in advance on high‑season days-these departures sell out and are time‑limited; otherwise use the park shuttles to spread visits over both sides for different perspectives.
  • Arrive with park opening time and use the park's internal walkways and elevators to sequence viewpoints (Brazil for panoramas, Argentina for intimate trails) to avoid peak crowds at the most famous viewpoints.

Best Time to Visit Iguaçu National Park #

The drier months (roughly April-September) are generally the best time to visit Iguaçu National Park for clearer trails and better access, though the falls are spectacular year‑round.

Dry season (recommended)
Apr-Sep · 15-25 °C
Less rain, better trail conditions and easier viewing of the park and trails around the falls-generally the most comfortable time for visitors.
Wet season
Dec-Feb · 25-33 °C
Heavy rains and higher river flows make the falls even more dramatic but can cause trail closures, swollen rivers and more insects.
