Monte Igueldo (Igeldo) is a coastal headland and small mountain west of San Sebastián (Donostia) in the Basque Country, Spain, known for its historic funicular and summit attractions. It provides one of the principal elevated viewpoints over the city’s famous bay.

Tourist facilities and the funicular were developed in the early 20th century to capitalize on the headland’s views and growing seaside tourism. The amusement park and funicular retain much of their historic character and have been maintained as heritage attractions.

Sited on the western edge of San Sebastián’s bay, the headland projects into the Bay of Biscay and is part of the municipality of Donostia-San Sebastián in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country.

  • Funicular date: The funicular dates to 1912 and remains one of the mountain's most photographed historic features.
  • Best viewpoint: The summit viewpoint gives unobstructed views across La Concha Bay and the city of San Sebastián, especially dramatic at sunset.

What to See #

  • Funicular: A hillside funicular that links the seaside area with the summit, opened in 1912 and still operating as a historic transport link to the viewpoint.

  • Faro and viewpoint: A lighthouse and headland viewpoint that provide wide coastal panoramas of La Concha Bay, the bay's shell-shaped beach, and the city of San Sebastián about 4 km to the east.
