Huascarán
Mountain Peru's highest tropical mountain, glaciated summit
Huascarán towers over Peru’s Cordillera Blanca as the country’s highest peak (6,768 m). Mountaineers and trekkers visit Huascarán National Park for glaciers, high‑altitude climbs and glacier‑fed alpine lakes.
Huascarán is the highest mountain in Peru, a twin-peaked massif in the Cordillera Blanca with a highest point of 6,768 metres. It lies in the Department of Ancash and dominates Huascarán National Park.
The mountain is a major destination for high-altitude mountaineering and alpine trekking. The south summit is the higher of the two at 6,768 metres and technical climbing routes approach both summits from glacier basins; lower-altitude trekking around the park also attracts hikers and acclimatization walks from Huaraz.
Huascarán formed through Andean uplift and glaciation; local mountaineering history dates to the early 20th century and organised ascents began in the 1930s. On 31 May 1970 a major earthquake triggered a rock and ice avalanche from Huascarán that destroyed the town of Yungay and caused thousands of deaths, reshaping local settlements and hazard planning.
The massif sits in the high Andes of central Peru within Huascarán National Park, roughly 400 km north of Lima by road. The nearest regional centre is Huaraz, which serves as the usual base for expeditions and day trips into the park.
- Viewing tips: Best views are from the road between Caraz and Yungay and from Huaraz; early morning light and clear dry-season months (May-September) give the most reliable visibility.
- Glacial retreat: Glacier retreat has been marked over recent decades, changing routes and increasing objective hazards for climbers and hikers.
What to See #
- Huascarán summits: The higher south summit reaches 6,768 metres and the north summit is about 6,655 metres, forming the twin peaks most climbers and maps distinguish.
- Huascarán National Park: Located within Huascarán National Park, the mountain sits among glaciers and high Andean valleys that feed several downstream rivers and moraine lakes.
How to Get to Huascarán #
Huascarán (Cordillera Blanca, Peru) is reached via the regional mountain city of Huaraz. Most visitors fly or travel from Lima - Lima to Huaraz is a road journey of about 7-8 hours (roughly 400-450 km) on the Panamericana Norte and the inland highway to Huaraz, or you can take long‑distance buses that run this route. From Huaraz local minibuses or taxis serve trailheads and park entrances (for example toward Yungay, Carhuaz and the Parón Valley) and further trekking is required to reach high camp and glacier approaches.
Tips for Visiting Huascarán #
- Visit Huascarán and the Huascarán National Park in the dry season (roughly May-September) when trails, mountain weather and visibility are most reliable for high‑altitude trekking or climbing.
- Use Huaraz as your acclimatization and logistics base - most treks and climbs in the Huascarán massif are organized from there, and permits/park fees are handled through local operators and the Park authority.
- If you plan to climb or do technical high‑altitude trekking, hire a registered mountain guide and confirm required park permits and rescue/insurance arrangements well before arrival; Huascarán involves serious alpine conditions.
Best Time to Visit Huascarán #
Huascarán is best attempted in the Andean dry season when weather windows are more reliable, but expect very cold, high-altitude conditions year-round.
