Huaca del Sol

Huaca del Sol is a large adobe ceremonial and administrative pyramid built by the Moche culture on the north coast of Peru near Trujillo. It was one of the principal Moche monuments and formed part of an extensive ritual-urban complex.

The structure originally comprised multiple stacked platforms built in adobe, with a large footprint dominating the surrounding valley; surviving remains show successive construction phases. The site is interpreted as having political, ceremonial, and administrative functions within Moche society.

The huaca was constructed by the Moche civilization during the Early Intermediate Period (roughly 1st through 8th centuries CE) and was later damaged by looting and the removal of adobe bricks after the Spanish conquest. Excavations and conservation work have aimed to stabilise and study the remaining architecture.

Huaca del Sol sits in the Moche Valley near the modern city of Trujillo in the La Libertad region of coastal northern Peru, within a landscape of coastal plains and river valleys where the Moche established major settlements.

• Preservation note: Large-scale damage occurred historically when adobe bricks were removed for construction, so much of the original superstructure is eroded or absent; visits focus on the remaining platform and archaeological context.
