Huaca de la Luna is a large Moche-period adobe temple complex on the northern Peruvian coast near Trujillo, built during the first millennium AD. It forms one half of the Huacas of the Moche complex, paired with Huaca del Sol.
The exposed adobe structures display brightly painted friezes and carved architectural elements, ceremonial plazas and stairways conserved for public interpretation. An on-site museum presents excavated objects, wall fragments and explanatory displays about Moche ritual and society.
Erected by the Moche culture between about AD 100 and AD 700, the complex served ritual and administrative functions and was repeatedly rebuilt and painted over several centuries. Archaeological excavation in the 20th and 21st centuries has revealed burials, ceremonial deposits and painted scenes linked to ritual practice.
The site lies in Peru’s La Libertad region near the city of Trujillo, in the Moche Valley on the north coast, and is regularly visited as a short drive from Trujillo.
