House of Julia Felix
Ruins Roman house in Pompeii featuring frescoed rooms
Excavated in Pompeii, the House of Julia Felix displays Roman domestic rooms, private baths and frescoed walls; archaeological tours use it to illustrate urban life before Mount Vesuvius.
The House of Julia Felix is a large Roman domus within the archaeological site of Pompeii in Campania, Italy, notable for its extensive private baths and well-preserved wall paintings and decorative rooms, with primary use in the 1st century AD.
The complex contains an enclosed peristyle courtyard with a planted garden and central pool, multiple reception rooms decorated with frescoes, and a suite of private baths; the building also incorporated commercial spaces and rental apartments used for income. These combined functions make the house unusually large and multifunctional compared with many single-family Roman homes.
The property is associated with Julia Felix, a freedwoman who converted part of the complex to rental and leisure use after the earthquake of AD 62, and it has been excavated as part of the wider Pompeii excavations begun in the 18th century. Over time the structure has been conserved as part of the site’s presentation to visitors.
Situated inside the Pompeii archaeological area, the house lies along the main east-west thoroughfare Via dell’Abbondanza, within walking distance of other major Pompeii monuments and accessible from the site’s main entrances.
- Access: Included in the general ticket for the Pompeii archaeological site; the house sits along Via dell'Abbondanza and is easy to reach on the main visitor route.
- Viewing tips: Interior frescoes and the baths are best seen in the morning light when the interiors are less crowded and conservation lighting is clearer.
