House of Augustus
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman residence of Emperor Augustus on Palatine
The House of Augustus on Rome’s Palatine exposes imperial domestic rooms and fresco fragments; archaeology visitors come for early Roman residential remains and guided routes.
The House of Augustus is the principal residence attributed to the first Roman emperor, located on the Palatine Hill in Rome. The complex preserves domestic rooms, painted wall plaster, and architectural features dating to the late 1st century BCE and early 1st century CE.
Visitors can see room layouts, fragments of frescoes, and the arrangement of private and ceremonial spaces that reflect imperial domestic life. The site is visited as part of Palatine Hill archaeological tours and is significant for understanding early imperial architecture.
The residence was constructed and occupied by Augustus and was adapted over the early imperial period; archaeological work in the 20th and 21st centuries has exposed floor plans and wall paintings. The house formed part of successive layers of imperial construction on the Palatine.
The House of Augustus sits on the Palatine Hill in central Rome, overlooking the Roman Forum and the Circus Maximus area; it is accessed through the Palatine archaeological park and typically visited together with nearby ancient monuments.
