Hornos Island is a small island in Chile’s Magallanes Region that contains the well-known seafaring landmark Cape Horn. The island and its cape mark the southern edge of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago and have long been a navigational reference for ships rounding South America.

On the island visitors find a memorial plaza, a marked landing area and a Chilean lighthouse and shelter; many expedition cruises include a guided landing and short walk to the monument when weather permits. The site is exposed to the Drake Passage and often subject to harsh winds and seas, which limit access.

The cape has historical significance as a major maritime route marker and a challenging passage for sailing vessels during the age of sail. Today it is visited mainly for its maritime history, the monument, and the dramatic ocean setting.

Hornos Island lies at the southern end of the Tierra del Fuego group in the Drake Passage, within the Cabo de Hornos commune of Chile’s Magallanes Region.

  • Weather sensitivity: Landing at the island is weather-dependent; strong winds, surf and sea conditions often prevent disembarkation even when ships pass nearby.
  • Visitor management: The site is managed as part of Chile's protected area system and is commonly visited by expedition cruise ships that include a short guided landing and shore walk.

What to See #

  • Cape Horn Monument: The cape and memorial area with a polished cross and plaque commemorating seafarers, together with a small wooden walkway that marks the visitor landing zone.
  • Lighthouse and station: A functional Chilean lighthouse and small maintenance shelter used by authorities and occasionally staffed; serves as the most prominent built feature on the island.

How to Get to Hornos Island #

Isla Hornos (Cape Horn) is most commonly reached via expedition cruises from Ushuaia (Argentina) or Punta Arenas (Chile). Voyages must navigate the Drake Passage and weather can force itinerary changes; some trips include a landing permit for Cape Horn proper, but many only allow an offshore view.

  • If attempting to visit the Cape Horn area, book voyages with experienced, certified operators-the seas are famously unpredictable.
  • Expect strict Chilean park rules: no overnight landings on Cape Horn without permits; many operators must anchor offshore.
