Hook Island
Island Island in the Whitsundays, gateway to reefs
Part of the Whitsunday Islands, Hook Island lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park; visitors arrive by boat for snorkeling, diving on nearby reefs, sheltered anchorages and short bushwalks along rocky coves.
Hook Island is one of the Whitsunday Islands off the central coast of Queensland and lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The island is largely undeveloped and has no permanent township.
Coastal reefs and fringing coral make the surrounding waters a destination for snorkeling and diving, and visitors typically approach the island by private boat or organised tour. There are a number of sheltered bays and shoreline features used as anchorage and diving entry points.
The island forms part of the broader Whitsunday group and is managed under marine park regulations that protect coral and marine life. Land use is minimal, with much of the area kept in a natural state.
Hook Island sits off the Queensland coast near the main Whitsunday tourism hubs, with boat transfers commonly originating from Airlie Beach and nearby islands.
- Access: Boat access only from Airlie Beach or nearby Whitsunday islands; there are no vehicle or mainland road links.
- Conservation status: Lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and much of the island is undeveloped or protected marine environment, so marine permits and park regulations apply.
