Hohenwerfen Castle

Hohenwerfen Castle is a medieval rock castle above the Salzach valley near the town of Werfen in the state of Salzburg, Austria. The fortress dates back to the 11th century and is a well-preserved example of a hilltop defensive complex.

The site includes museum displays, period rooms and live falconry demonstrations that showcase trained birds of prey. The castle’s courtyards, towers and battlements are accessible to visitors and offer viewpoints over the valley below.

Construction of the castle began in 1077 under the authority of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, and it served historically as a fortress, hunting lodge and prison. Over the centuries it underwent repairs, expansions and restorations that shaped the present complex.

Hohenwerfen sits on a rocky spur overlooking the Salzach River and the village of Werfen, roughly 40 kilometres south of the city of Salzburg. The castle occupies a commanding position in the Northern Limestone Alps.
