Hoensbroek Castle

Hoensbroek Castle (Kasteel Hoensbroek) is a large medieval castle complex in the village of Hoensbroek in southern Limburg, Netherlands, and is one of the largest castles in the country. The site preserves multiple construction phases from the medieval period through later domestic alterations.

The complex includes a central keep, inner and outer baileys and extensive domestic wings that show how the site evolved from a fortified residence to a noble household. Visitors can tour restored rooms, service areas and defensive features and see displays on the castle’s architecture and local history.

The castle originated in the medieval period and was expanded and remodelled over several centuries by successive owners; it served as a fortified noble residence and later as a family seat. In the 20th century the property was conserved and opened to the public as a museum to interpret its layered history.

Hoensbroek Castle stands in the village of Hoensbroek in Limburg province, near the city of Heerlen in the southeast Netherlands. The site is accessible by regional roads and public transport from nearby towns.
