Hochwilde
Mountain High Alpine peak on Italy-Austria border
Located on the Austro‑Italian alpine border in Trentino‑Südtirol, Hochwilde (Hohe Wilde) is visited by mountaineers and ski tourers for glaciated routes and high‑alpine ascents.
How to Get to Hochwilde #
Approaches start from the Passeiertal (Val Passiria) on the Italian side or from Austrian valleys in Tyrol; nearest notable towns include Mals/Malles and Schlinig. Access typically involves mountain roads to trailhead villages and then foot travel to huts and glacier basins; local alpine club huts are the usual staging points.
Tips for Visiting Hochwilde #
- If attempting the north face or glacier routes, hire a UIAA-qualified guide - crevasses and cornices are real hazards.
- Approach routes from the Stilfser Joch (Stelvio) side climb through high alpine terrain and can be long; plan an overnight at a mountain hut.
- Bring crampons and an ice axe for any ascent outside the briefest summer window.
Best Time to Visit Hochwilde #
High-mountain climbing is safest in July-September; outside that window glaciers and mixed terrain demand technical expertise.
